John Chapter 1
Verse 1
MARGIN REFERENCE "a-1"
Genesis 1:1-4
VERSE CONTENT OF MARGIN REFERENCE
a In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. {2} And the
earth was without form, and void; and darkness <was> upon the face of the deep.
And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. {3} And God said, Let
there be light: and there was light. {4} And God saw the light,
that <it was> good: and God divided the light from the darkness.
MARGIN REFERENCE "a-2"
Colossians 1:12-20
VERSE CONTENT OF MARGIN REFERENCE
Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the
inheritance of the saints in light: {13} Who hath delivered us from the power of
darkness, and hath translated <us> into the kingdom of his dear Son: {14} In
whom we have redemption through his blood, <even> the forgiveness of sins: {15}
Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: {16}
For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in
earth, visible and invisible, whether <they be> thrones, or dominions, or
principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: {17} And
he is before all things, and by him all things consist. {18} And he is the head
of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that
in all <things> he might have the preeminence. {19} For it pleased <the Father>
that in him should all fullness dwell; {20} And, having made peace through the
blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, <I
say>, whether <they be> things in earth, or things in heaven.
MARGIN REFERENCE "a-3"
1 John 1:1-4
VERSE CONTENT OF MARGIN REFERENCE
That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have
seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of
the Word of life; {2} (For the life was manifested, and we have seen <it>, and
bear witness, and show unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father,
and was manifested unto us;) {3} That which we have seen and heard declare we
unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship
<is> with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ. {4} And these things write
we unto you, that your joy may be full.
John Chapter 1 Verse 1
MARGIN REFERENCE "b-1"
b Revelation
19:11-13
VERSE CONTENT OF MARGIN REFERENCE
And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him
<was> called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.
{12} His eyes <were> as a flame of fire, and on his head <were> many crowns; and
he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. {13} And he <was>
clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of
God.
MARGIN REFERENCE "b-2"
John 17:5
VERSE CONTENT OF MARGIN REFERENCE
And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I
had with thee before the world was.
MARGIN REFERENCE "b-3"
Philippians 2:6
VERSE CONTENT OF MARGIN REFERENCE
Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with
God:
MARGIN REFERENCE "b-4"
John 1:14
VERSE CONTENT OF MARGIN REFERENCE
And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his
glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and
truth.
John Chapter 1 Verse 2
MARGIN REFERENCE "1"
The content of this reference is a comment, based on textual scholarship,
concerning word choices, alternate word choices, and other textual information.
CONTENT OF MARGIN REFERENCE
2 1 Lit., This one
In this case the reference refers to a "Literal" translation of the original
Greek word used here. So here Verse 2 would "literally" read: "This one
was in the beginning with God." Often translators choose words and phrases
which have a better "English" meaning to match the original "Greek" meaning
where the actual literal words could be hard to understand.
John Chapter 1 Verse 3
MARGIN REFERENCE
"a-1"
a 1 Corinthians 8:6
VERSE CONTENT OF MARGIN REFERENCE
But to us <there is but> one God, the Father, of whom <are> all things, and we
in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom <are> all things, and we by
him.
MARGIN REFERENCE "a-2"
John 1:10-14
VERSE CONTENT OF MARGIN REFERENCE
He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.
{11} He came unto his own, and his own received him not. {12} But as many as
received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, <even> to them
that believe on his name: {13} Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of
the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. {14} And the Word was made flesh,
and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten
of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
MARGIN REFERENCE "a-3"
Hebrews 1:1-12
VERSE CONTENT OF MARGIN REFERENCE
God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the
fathers by the prophets, {2} Hath in these last days spoken unto us by <his>
Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the
worlds; {3} Who being the brightness of <his> glory, and the express image
of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by
himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high; {4}
Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a
more excellent name than they. {5} For unto which of the angels said he at any
time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to
him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son? {6} And again, when he bringeth in
the first begotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God
worship him. {7} And of the angels he saith, Who maketh his angels spirits, and
his ministers a flame of fire. {8} But unto the Son <he saith>, Thy throne, O
God, <is> for ever and ever: a scepter of righteousness <is> the scepter of thy
kingdom. {9} Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God,
<even> thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.
{10} And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth;
and the heavens are the works of thine hands: {11} They shall perish; but
thou remainest; and they all shall wax old as doth a garment; {12} And as a
vesture shalt thou fold them up, and they shall be changed: but thou art the
same, and thy years shall not fail.
So now you can see why looking up margin cross references can add so much more depth to the study of a verse, based on the previous work of others. This has been called: "Standing on the Shoulders of Giants." 1
