THE DEITY OF CHRIST
The Old Testament names of God are merged in Christ. Cp. Isaiah 7:14 with Matthew 1:23. Cp. Psalm 110:1 with Matthew 22:42-45. Cp. Exodus 3:14 with John 8:58 and 18:5-6.
The attributes of God as revealed in the Old Testament are found in Christ (Review compound names for God in OT, New Scofield Bible, p. 981.)
Christ possesses the five unique and essential attributes of deity.
He is eternal (Jn. 1:1-2; Mic. 5:2; Isa. 9:6; Jn. 8:58; 17:5).
He is immutable (Mat. 3:6withHeb. 1:11-12; 13:8).
He asserted His omnipresence Jn. 3:13; 14:23; Mt. 18:20; 28:20).
He
displayed omnipotence (Jn. 20:30-31).
John's Gospel is built around the seven miracles which Jesus performed:
John 2:1-11 - Water into wine
John 4:46-54 - Nobleman's son
John 5:1-9 - Bethesda pool
John 6:1-13 - 5000 fed
John 6:15-21 - Walking on the sea
John 9:1-7 - Man born blind
John 11:1-44 - Lazarus raised
He was omniscient.
He
claimed it.
(1) He claimed to be a perfectly informed teacher (Sermon on
the Mount, Mt. 6:9, 25; 7:24).
(2) He claimed to know all about God and heaven (Mt. 11:27;Jn.
5:28-29; 8:38; 14:1-3).
He
displayed it.
(1) He knew things without being told (Mk. 2:6-8; Jn. 11:4,14).
(2) He never mistook the future.
(a) He warned His disciples of coming persecution
(Mt. 24:9; Jn. 16:1-3,33).
(b) He said that He would stir humanity for
ages to come (Mt. 10:34-35; 24:14).
(c) His prediction about Mary's ointment
(Mt. 26:1-13).
(3) He always showed perfect clarity of mind.
(a) He was never surprised.
(b) He was never confused.
(c) He never deliberated before answering
any question.
(d) He never asked counsel from anyone else
and yet He never made a mistake.
(e) He never grew by experience.
(f) He never asked questions to get information.
