And you were (Lit., "being") dead (i.e., separated)
    in (Alt., "by reason of") your
        trespasses and
        sins,
(2:2)
        in which you formerly walked
            according to
                the course (Lit., "age") of this world,
            according to
                the Prince of the power
                    of the air,
                    of the spirit
                        that is now working
                            in the sons of disobedience,
(2:3)
Among them
    we too all
        formerly lived
            in the lusts of our flesh,
            indulging (Lit., "doing") the desires
                of the flesh and
                of the mind (Lit., "thoughts"),
and
    were by nature
        children of wrath,
        even as the rest.
(2:4)
But God,
    being rich in mercy,
    because of His great love with which He loved us,
(2:5)
        even when we were dead (i.e., separated)
                in (Lit., "by reason of") our transgressions,
    made us alive together with Christ (Some ancient mss. read, "in Christ")
    (by grace you have been saved),
(2:6)
   and
    raised us up
        with Him and
    seated us
        with Him
            in the heavenly places,
            in Christ Jesus.

            in order that
                    He might show the surpassing riches of His grace
                        in kindness toward us
                            in Christ Jesus
(2:8)
for by grace
    you have been saved (Lit., "you are having been saved," [seswsmenoi], (Perf. Pass. Ptc. Nom. Pl. Masc.), "You are in the position of having been saved, with long term results extending into the future."),
        through Faith,
        and that (i.e., that salvation), not of yourselves,
            it is the gift of God;
(2:9)
        not as a result of works,
               that no one should boast.

for
    we are
        His workmanship,
        created in Christ Jesus
            for good works,
            which God prepared beforehand,
                that we should walk in them.
(2:11)
Therefore
    remember, that
        formerly you
            who, the Gentiles
                by birth and
                called "uncircumcised"
                    by those who call themselves "the circumcision" (that done in the body by the hands of men)
(2:12)
    remember that at that time
        you were
            separate from Christ,
            excluded (Alt., "alienated") from citizenship in Israel and
            foreigners to the covenants of the promise and
            without hope and
            without God
                in the world
(2:13)
But now
    in Christ Jesus
        you
            who once were far away
            have been brought (Lit., "became," or "were made") near
                by (Alt., "in", or "through") the blood of Christ.
(2:14)
                For
                    He Himself
                        is our peace,
                        who made both groups into one, and
                        destroyed the barrier of the dividing wall of hostility, (Lit., "the dividing wall of the barrier," (the first outer court of Herod's temple, stone barrier enclosing the inner court, shoulder high, with a sign "No Gentile allowed within under penalty of death."  This sign was upheld by Jewish and Roman Law.  The outer court was the place of the money changers, and animal inspection and sales.)

                            by abolishing
                                in His flesh
                                the enmity (Alt., "the enmity by abolishing in His flesh the Law"),
                                    which is the Law with its commandments
                                        contained in ordinances,
His purpose
    in Himself
    was that
        He might make (Lit., "create") one new man out of the two,
            thus establishing peace, and
(2:16)
        (He) might reconcile them both
            in this one body
            to God
            through the cross,
                by it having put to death their hostility.
(2:17)
"AND HE
    CAME AND
    PREACHED
        PEACE TO YOU WHO WERE FAR AWAY, AND
        PEACE TO YOU WHO WERE NEAR;" (Isaiah 57:19)
(2:18)
for
    through Him
    we both have our access
        to the father
        by one spirit.
(2:19)
Consequently,
    you are no longer
        strangers and
        aliens,
but (now)
    you are fellow citizens with the God's people, (Lit., "holy ones") and
    you are members of God's household,
(2:20)
        having been built
            upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets,
                Christ Jesus Himself being the corner stone,
(2:21)
                    in whom
                        the whole building,
                            is being fitted together and
                            is growing into a holy temple (Alt., "sanctuary")
                            in the Lord;
(2:22)
                    in whom
                        you also are being built together
                            into a dwelling
                                in which God lives
                                    by His Spirit.
