The Greek Prepositions are the basis of all of our English Prepositions. Often, however, many of the Greek prepositions were translated into other languages - like Latin. This doesn’t change the focus of each preposition, just the more modern word it is called by.

The reason I include this chart, created originally by my old friend (now deceased) Bible teacher, writer and editor for Eternity Magazine, renowned Bible teacher in Pennsylvania, New York and Boston, Massachusetts (where I met him) is because understanding prepositions plays an enormous part in understanding the Scriptures, as well as all other writing.

In this chart the circle represents IN SOMETHING OR PLACE OR IDEA. The prepositions on the left are outside the in but have relationships to the IN. The prepositions on the right are again outside the IN, but all have relationships to the IN. The above relationships and the below relationships are similar. And, of course, there ae the words that have to do with the inner space.

Now look at the little words under the names of the Greek Prepositions - these will begin to give you a clue as to a more complex relationship - where IN can mean “by means of.” Like places and things that aren’t specifically - My first thought was “In Love.” Love is only a metaphysical place. Or how about “involved,” or “in tuned.”

So, why bring all this up? What I have found along my way is that understanding these words has enabled me to look at the Biblical text paying attention to prepositions - I begin to understand how other translations come to be. Did Jesus go through the night in a boat into a storm, or He go because of a storm, or did He go by means of the storm. Each translation of the same Greek word could lead you to other thoughts about what the Word is saying to you.

And then there are Verbs - but for another time!
