THE SECOND COMING OF

JESUS CHRIST

CHAPTER 19

14.  The Second Coming of Christ 19:1-21

       [The Fourfold Hallelujah]

       a.    Joy in Heaven 19:1—10

              (1.) Hallelujahs of the Saints

[Multitude] 19:1-6

The Time Sequence 1a

THE TEXT

1 After these things

Ryrie, Pg. 151

OUR COMMENT:

As we have worked our way through the book so far, we’ve been introduced to a few different ways to view the book’s timeline, linear, repetitive, etc. But here, with the 2nd Coming of The Christ we begin to see the ending of the book. We can be pretty confident that “After these things” does look back to all that has gone before – in any viewpoint. Now we enter into the last and important events.

The Group Involved 1b-2a

THE TEXT

I heard something like a loud voice

of a great multitude in heaven, saying,

Ryrie, Pg. 151 2nd Paragraph

OUR COMMENT:

It would seem like there is nothing in the words that would prevent the angels, the twenty-four elders, and the four living ones in all shouting the words that are to come even if different groups are introduced again in the next verse. Why wouldn’t the whole heavenly collection be shouting with “a loud voice” the worship of Almighty God?

The Content 2B-6

THE TEXT

“Hallelujah! Salvation and glory and power belong to our God;

       2 because His judgments are true and righteous;

for He has judged the great harlot

who was corrupting the earth with her immorality, and

He has avenged the blood of His bond-servants on her.”

3 And a second time they said,

“Hallelujah! Her smoke rises up forever and ever.”

4 And the twenty-four elders

and the four living creatures

       fell down and worshiped God

who sits on the throne saying,

“Amen. Hallelujah!”

5 And a voice came from the throne, saying,

“Give praise to our God,

       all you His bond-servants

       you who fear Him,

       the small and the great.”

6 Then I heard something like the voice of a great multitude and

like the sound of many waters and

like the sound of mighty peals of thunder, saying,

“Hallelujah! For the Lord our God, the Almighty, reigns.”

Ryrie, Pg. 151 Bottom

OUR COMMENT:

Harry Ironside tells us that: “This is the last time the twenty-four elders are seen in the book. The symbol changes in the next section, and the bride, the Lamb’s wife, takes their place. The elders represent the heavenly saints as a worshiping company of holy and royal priests. But when the harlot-church is off the scene, the true bride appears and the elders are never again mentioned. It is noteworthy that in their final appearance (19:4), as in their first in chapter 4, they are seen in the attitude of worship. They adore the Lamb as Creator and Redeemer in Chapter 4. Here they adore God as moral governor of the universe and for the display of His righteous judgment.”[1]

There is a strong and very important word in verse five that is the key to the Bible’s focus upon a certain kind of faith for those who Love the Lord God, His Son, and His Holy Spirit. “Bond-servants.” We have touched upon this word, concept, during our studies. These are “servants” who have dedicated their “worship” as a matter of their love for their Master – and not particularly for their possible reward. Biblically, indebted workers who, after paying off their debt through service, voluntarily and willingly re-submit themselves to their master – because they have come to love, adore, respect, and desire their Master, His mission, and His Fellowship! Alas, the basis of true Faith – Jewish and Christian.

(2.) Marriage of the Lamb 19:7-10

The Announcement of the Marriage  v. 7

THE TEXT

7 Let us

       rejoice and

       be glad and

       give the glory to Him,

for the marriage of the Lamb has come

Ryrie, Pg. 152 2nd Paragraph

OUR COMMENT

The “Bride,” made up of millions of millions of those who have willingly and voluntarily moved from a self-centered position in their lives and chosen to become the blessed property of Almighty God – through the self-sacrifice of His own Son on our behalf. Indeed, Jesus, The Christ is the center element of this moment. It is He that has done this for His Father and for each and every one of us. Liberating us from ourselves and our evil world – now at this moment we are there and giving all the glory to Him!

The Arry of the Bride vv. 7b-8

THE TEXT

and His bride has made herself ready.”

8 It was given to her

       to clothe herself in fine linen, bright and clean;

for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints.

Ryrie, Pg. 152 middle

OUR COMMENT

“Entirely of the Grace of God!”

The Accompaniment of the Marriage v. 9

THE TEXT

9 Then he says to me,

“Write, ‘Blessed are those who are invited

to the marriage supper of the Lamb.’”

And he says to me,

“These are true words of God.”

Ryrie, Pg. 152 Last paragraph

OUR COMMENT

C. I. Scofield: Bride of Christ, Summary: “The marriage of the Lamb” (lit. “the marriage supper of the Lamb”) is the consummation of the marriage of Christ and the Church as His bride. The figure is according to the original pattern of marriage covering three stages: (1) the betrothal, legally binding when the individual members of the body of Christ are saved; (2) the coming of the Bridegroom for His bride at the rapture of the Church; and 93) the marriage supper of the Lamb. Occurring in connection with the second coming of Christ to establish His millennial kingdom. The Lamb’s wife is to be contrasted with the harlot of 17:1; and she is also to be distinguished from Israel, the unfaithful wife of the Lord (Jehovah) in historic times, who is to be restored in the millennium (Isa. 54:1; Hosea 2:1-17).[2]

The Awe of John v. 10

THE TEXT

10 Then I fell at his feet to worship him.

       But he says to me,

“Do not do that;

       I am a fellow servant

              of yours and

[of] your brethren who hold the testimony of Jesus;                           worship God.

                           For the testimony of Jesus

                                  is the spirit of prophecy.”

Ryrie, Pg. 153 2nd Paragraph

OUR COMMENT
Angels, according to Acts 1:14, are sent specifically to serve those who “inherit salvation.” They are “ministering spirits” who are dispatched by God to care for believers. Here they are also portrayed as those who worship Christ, are protectors of believers, and executors of God’s word as they are under God’s authority.

KEY NUMBER 11: THE SECOND COMING

Ch-19:11-21

b. Judgment, on Earth 19:11—21

       (1.) Advent, of Christ 19:11-16

His Aim v. 11

THE TEXT

11 And I saw heaven opened,

       and behold,

              a white horse, and

He who sat on it is called Faithful and True,

                           and in righteousness

                     He judges and wages war.

Ryrie, Pg. 153 Middle

OUR COMMENT

Scofield – The controlling factor of judgment will be righteousness, a theme which begins at Genesis 18:25 and continues through the Scriptures to Revelation 19:11 (Psalm 9:8 “And He will judge the world in righteousness;” 50:6 “And the heavens declare His righteousness, For God Himself is judge”; etc.).[3]

His Appearance vv. 12-13

THE TEXT

12 His eyes are a flame of fire, and

[He has] on His head are many diadems; and

He has a name written on Him

which no one knows except Himself.

13 He is clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and

His name is called The Word of God.

Ryrie, Pg. 153 Bottom

OUR COMMENT

Donald Grey Barnhouse states: “He has a name written which no one knows but He, Himself. One commentator, describing the glory of the scene, the triumphant King with the many diadems, adds, “He has a glory and a character of His own, incommunicable and incomprehensible, ‘a name written that no man knew, but He Himself,’ Man as He is, He is also the Son of God, and thus a fullness resides in Him which no mere creature intelligence can fathom.”[4]

His Armies v. 14

THE TEXT

14 And the armies

       which are in heaven,

       clothed in fine linen,

              white and clean,

were following Him on white horses.

Ryrie, Pg. 154 2nd Paragraph

OUR COMMENTS

“The armies in heaven who follow Him comprise (1) the church, which we have just seen as the bride; (2) the saints of former dispensations (O.T. believers); and (3) the tribulation saints who had been slain under the beast and the antichrist. All ride forth with Him, their now triumphant Lord, and He comes to take His great power and reign.”[5]

His Authority vv. 15-16

THE TEXT

15 From His mouth comes a sharp sword,

so that with it He may strike down the nations, and

He will rule them with a rod of iron; and

He treads the wine press of the fierce wrath of God,

              the Almighty.

       16 And on His robe

       And on His thigh

       He has a name written,

“KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.”

Ryrie, Pg. 154 3rd Paragraph

OUR COMMENT

The Shepherd’s rod: Protection from wild animals and predators. It was also used to break the leg of a sheep who refused to stay with the flock under the shepherds’ care. Now The Shepherd’s rod becomes much more serious as the predators, the evil nations, are to be dealt with.

(2.) Armageddon War 19:17-21

The Carnage vv. 17-18

THE TEXT

17 Then I saw an angel standing in the sun, and

he cried out with a loud voice,

saying to all the birds which fly in midheaven

“Come, assemble for the great supper of God,

       18 so that

you may eat the flesh of kings and

[you may eat] the flesh of commanders and

[you may eat] the flesh of mighty men and

[you may eat] the flesh of horses and

of those who sit on them and

[you may eat] the flesh of all men,

both free men and slaves, and

                     [both] small and great.”

Ryrie, Pg. 154 Lower Third

OUR COMMENT

The word for “supper,” refers to the principal meal of the day, is the same word used in both verses, but the events are in sharp contrast. The divine judgment upon the wicked is no respecter of persons or station and is the great equalizer of all.

The Conflict v. 19

THE TEXT

19 And I saw

       the beast and

the kings of the earth and

their armies assembled to make war

against Him who sat on the horse and

              against His army.

Ryrie, Pg. 154 Bottom

OUR COMMENT

John Walvoord, “There is some evidence that a struggle is going on between the various segments of the world empire at the time of the second coming of Christ; but with the appearance of the Lord in Glory and the procession of the armies of heaven accompanying Him, these armies of earth forget their differences and join in battle against the King of kings and Lord of Lords.”[6]

(3.) The Doom of the Beast and the False Prophet

The Captives v. 20

THE TEXT

20 And

       the beast was seized, and

[seized] with him [was] the false prophet

who performed the signs in his presence,

                     by which he deceived

                           those who had received

the mark of the beast and

                           those who worshiped his image;

these two were thrown alive into the lake of fire

                     which burns with brimstone.

Ryrie, Pg. 155 Top

The Conquest v. 21

THE TEXT

21 And the rest were killed with the sword

which came from the mouth of Him

who sat on the horse, and

all the birds were filled with their flesh.
