EPILOGUE

The epilogue to the book comprises most of chapter 22. It consists of words of comfort and words of caution.

2.    THE EPILOGUE 22:6-21

       a.    Words of Comfort 22:6-17

(1.)  "These sayings are Faithful and True" 2:6

THE TEXT

6 And he said to me,

“These words are faithful and true”;

       and the Lord,

the God of the spirits of the prophets,

              sent His angel

                     to show to His bond-servants

the things which must soon take place.

Ryrie, Pg. 173 2nd Paragraph

OUR COMMENT

Where do I find the words to describe the end of this fabulous study series on the Book of Revelation. I’ll let Ryrie speak for himself and share a short paragraph from Donald Grey Barnhouse:

“The prophetic visions of John are completed. John is brought back to the present and through him our Lord gives His last invitation to all men in order that they might be prepared to enter the heavenly, holy city and to partake of the water of life.”[2]

(2.) "I Come Quickly" 22:7

THE TEXT

7 “And behold,

       I am coming quickly.

Blessed is he who heeds the words

of the prophecy of this book.”

Ryrie, Pg. 173 3rd Paragraph

OUR COMMENT

I am reminded of so many TV commercials where there is a little picture in the upper corner, and at the magic moment, the little picture slides down the screen and gets larger and larger until it fills the screen – in less than a second. I can just imagine standing outside, casting my view upon a strange little bright spot - way up high. An ice cloud? A plane with some bright light? And suddenly that little bright spot, perhaps in less than a second, becomes The Son of God, the King of Kings, the Lord of Lords – Jesus, on a white horse leading His heavenly army on to righteous victory. But then I remember, I’ll be with Him at that moment. But now I keep looking… for I know He will be coming for me about 7 years before He comes on that white horse – So, I will keep on looking for Him.

(3.) God Is Worthy Of Worship 22:8-9

8 I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things.

And when I heard and saw,

I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel

                     who showed me these things.

9 But he *said to me,

       “Do not do that.

       I am a fellow servant

              of yours and

of your brethren the prophets and

of those who heed the words of this book.

                     Worship God.”

Ryrie, Pg. 173 Bottom

OUR COMMENT

Every day I need to remember that my faith in Jesus Christ as my Savior and Lord places me into that position as well. A Fellow servant of yours, and of all my brothers and sisters in-Christ, with the prophets of God, and All of those who heed the words o this book – Therefore, Worship God!

(4.) The book Is not sealed 22:10—11

(The Final Message)

THE TEXT

10 And he *said to me,

“Do not seal up the words of the prophecy of this book,

       for the time is near.

11 Let the one who does wrong, still do wrong; and

[let] the one who is filthy, still be filthy; and

let the one who is righteous, still practice righteousness; and

[let] the one who is holy, still keep himself holy.”

Ryrie, Pg. 174 2nd Paragraph

OUR COMMENT

We learn from the book that there are only two kinds of people in the world. Those who have voluntarily and intentionally and freely, chosen to Love God, His Son, and His Holy Spirit – as revealed to them in the years of their lives, and those who have not, and will not. – Therefore, the book has not been sealed because many still will have the opportunity to believe and be saved from the wrath of God to come.

(5.) Rewards will be given 22:12—13

THE TEXT

12 “Behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me,

       to render to every man

according to what he has done.

13 I am the Alpha and the Omega,

[I am] the first and the last,

[I am] the beginning and the end.”

Ryrie, Pg. 174 2nd Paragraph

OUR COMMENT

Rewards are hard for me to imagine. I feel rewarded by doing what He asks me to do.

6.)  Blessed are the Redeemed 22:14—15

THE TEXT

14 Blessed

are those who wash their robes, so that

they may have the right to the tree of life, and

[they] may enter by the gates into the city.

15 Outside are

       the dogs and

       the sorcerers and

       the immoral persons and

       the murderers and

       the idolaters, and

everyone who loves and practices lying.

Ryrie, Pg. 174 Middle

OUR COMMENT

Inside and Outside remind me of my growing up years in New England – in the Christmas winter! Inside was where the wood stove was – full of logs and red-hot flames. The beautiful Christmas Tree, Presents under that tree. No matter where you went in the house there was loving family, and a kind of warmth that brought much love and satisfaction.

Outside… bitter cold, several feet of snow, partially covering the house windows and doors. Ice under the snow and on top of it. Hight winds blowing the ice and snow everywhere. Listening to the pine trees exploding in the sub-zero temperatures.

A great picture as a metaphor of the difference between the rewards of being saved in Jesus or being unsaved. If you are unsaved, please consider that future, and if you are saved, please desperately reach out to those who are unsaved and try to bring them in to the love and warmth that awaits them there.

(7.) Gracious is Our Lord 22:16—17

THE TEXT

16 “I, Jesus,

       have sent My angel

to testify to you these things for the churches.

I am the root and

[I am] the descendant of David,

[I am] the bright morning star.”

17 The Spirit and the bride say,

“Come.”

And let the one who hears say

       “Come.” And

              let the one who is thirsty come;

let the one who wishes take the water of life

                     without cost.

Ryrie, Pg. 174 Bottom

OUR COMMENT

COME – COME – COME!

b.    Words of Warning 22:18—19

(1.) Adding to the BOOK 22:18

THE TEXT

18 I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book:

       if anyone adds to them,

God will add to him the plagues

                     which are written in this book;

If anyone adds to the words of the prophecy, God will add to that person the many and varied plagues written in it (cf. Deut. 4:2; Prov. 30:6). What particular plague or plagues may be experienced in individual cases is not stated, but those who add to the book will suffer.

(2.) Subtracting from the BOOK 22:19

THE TEXT

19 and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy,

God will take away his part

from the tree of life and

from the holy city, which are written in this book.

Ryrie, Pg. 175 Middle

c.    Closing Benediction 22:20—21

THE TEXT

20 He who testifies to these things says,

“Yes, I am coming quickly.”

Amen.

Come, Lord Jesus.

21 The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all. Amen.

Ryrie, Pg. 175 Bottom
