OLD TESTAMENT PROPHETIC BOOKS
NAHUM: Introduction and Simple Outline

NAME: Nahum means "comforted."

DATE: Nahum is one of the "undated" prophets. I place him in the 7th century as the concluding prophet of the Assyrian period. Whitcomb's dates are 645-620 BC.

CONTEMPORARIES: Zephaniah and Jeremiah.

THEME: Nahum announced the doom of the capital city (Nineveh) of Assyria. Assyria is never to be restored. This is good news to Judah. Messengers rejoice as they take the message up and down the mountains of Judah (1:15). Incidentally, 2:4 is simply a night battle in the streets of Nineveh. Some have done a disservice to the study of prophecy by imagining it is a description of the automobile.

OUTLINE: See Appendix.
