HAGGAI: Introduction and Simple Outline

DATE: Second year of Darius Hystaspes, king of Persia, sixteen years after Cyrus's decree permitting the return to the land and rebuilding of the temple (Ezra 4:24-6:22). His dates are 520-505 BC (Whitcomb). See Appendix.

CONTEMPORARIES: The prophet Zechariah and the historical book of Ezra.

OCCASION: A rebuke for not rebuilding the temple and a demand that they do it.

METHOD: There are five messages, carefully dated, starting with what would be in our calendar September 1 and concluding with December 24.

RESULT: His message brought action and the people are commended.
