(Douglas B. MacCorkle
[1])

Dr. MacCorkle’s personal translation is distinguished by a designed slant toward basic exegesis. He intends that a smooth reading style might at times be sacrificed for greater literary accuracy and for the greater prominence of contexts. This makes it a study translation. It is both expanded (includes interpretive helps, and exegetical (explanative) or even an expository (describes and informs) translation. It does not violate an accurate literal understanding of the text. Dr. MacCorkle writes, “We hope all of our alleged biases are clearly stated without apology so that readers may make their own evaluations, under the Holy Spirit and the correlated Word of God….”

I.         CHAPTER FIVE - The Church As The Bride Of Christ

A.        The Spiritual Engagement of the Bride 5:1-17

1.        The Bridal Walk in a New Love 5:1-2

2.        The Bridal Walk in a New Light 5:3-14

3.        The Bridal Walk in a New Life 5:15-17

1 Therefore, in your status as beloved children, get to be doers of what you see God do. 2 And maintain a walk in godly love, just as Christ also loved us and delivered Himself up to God for our benefit as an offering and a sacrifice for a sweet-smelling fragrance. 3 But fornication and all uncleanness, or covetousness, do not let it be mentioned among you, as is fitting for people who are set apart. 4 This includes obscenity and foolish talking or jesting, things which are not appropriate, instead give thanks. 5 For you all should recognize this fact: no fornicator or unclean person or coveter, which is idolatry, possesses an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. 6 Do not let any person deceive you with meaningless words, for because of these things the wrath of God keeps coming on the sons of disobedience. 7 Therefore, do not become their partners. 8 The first reason is, you all were formerly identified with moral darkness but now you are identified with spiritual light in the Lord. Behave yourselves as children characterized by spiritual light. 9 The second reason is, the fruit of the spiritual light consists in all kinds of goodness, righteousness, and truth. 10 This spiritual fruit is accredited evidence of what pleases the Lord well. 11 Stop sharing fellowship with the unfruitful works of the moral darkness, instead even practice exposing them. 12 The third reason, it is disgraceful even to talk about the things they do in secret. 13 But when all these things are exposed by this spiritual light, only then are they made visible. 14 The explanation is everything that gets revealed is spiritual light. Consequently, the scripture says: Wake right up, sleeping ones, And rise right up from among those who are spiritually dead, and Christ will shine upon you. 15 Therefore, take heed how clearly you behave yourselves, not as unwise people but as wise. 16 Keep buying up your opportunity, because the days are deadly evil. 17 Because of this, stop being unwise, instead understand what the Lord's will is.

B.        The Experiences of the Bride 5:18-26

1.        The Filling by God the Holy Spirit 5:18

2.        The Flow from God the Holy Spirit's Filling 5:19-20

3.        The Filling of the Christian Marriage 5:21-26

4.        The Functioning Principle 5:21

5.        The Principal Function in Wives and Husbands
5:22-26

18 And stop getting drunk with wine, in which is an unsaved kind of living, rather allow yourselves to be filled constantly by the Spirit. 19 Let these be the characteristics of your filling: first, speaking to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs; second, singing and making melody in your hearts to the Lord; 20 third, giving thanks always, for everything, to our God and Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; 21 fourth, practicing submitting yourselves to one another with respect for Christ. 22 For example, the wives are to keep submitting themselves to their own husbands as to the Lord, 23 because the husband is the head of the wife as Christ also is the Head of the Church, since He Himself is the Savior of the Body. 24 Nevertheless as the Church submits herself to Christ, this is how the wives are to be submissive to their husbands in everything. 25 You husbands keep on loving your wives in a godly manner, just as Christ loved the Church and delivered Himself up for her benefit. 26 His purpose is to set her apart, having cleansed her by the bath of water, consisting of the Word.

C.        The Expectations of the Bride 5:27-33

1.        Expectation of Her Glory 5:27

2.        Expectation in Her Groom 5:28-31

3.        Expectation of Her Greatness 5:32-33

27 It is His personal purpose to present the Church to Himself as glorious, not having a spot or wrinkle or any of such things, but that it should be holy and blameless. 28 So also husbands are obligated to love their wives in a godly manner, as they would their own bodies. He who loves His wife in this manner is really loving himself, 29 for no one ever hated his own body, on the contrary he nourishes it and cherishes it, just as Christ does with the Church, 30 because we are members of His Body. 31 For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother behind, and shall be faithfully devoted to his wife, and the two shall be one flesh. 32 This is a secret of great magnitude, but I am talking principally about Christ and about the Church. 33 Nonetheless let each husband also personally love his own wife in a godly manner, as he does himself, and let his wife respect her husband.
